K & J Mixed Media Canvas

Does anyone remember these letters?  I bought them awhile back and posted on my Pearl Gateway Facebook page in February, asking what I should do with them:

Photo: Two wooden initial letters - what would you with them? Paint? Buttons? Gems? Help!! #fmsphotoaday #yourname

Well…6 months later, I finally got off my duff and did something – mixed media, yay! (If you’re wondering, K & J are our first initials)

I started with a canvas of this painting that I wasn’t a huge fan of, see it here.  That’s the great thing about canvas, you can so easily just paint over it if you don’t like it.  I mixed several different latex paints and swirled them around.  As they dried, I painted the wooden letters with a mix of two different gold acrylic paints.

The spot to the left was kind of blank, so I added this frame I got from my swag at SNAP! conference in April 2012.  I adhered some shells to it with some E-6000 and stuck two Dear Lizzy letters in the center.

I really liked the shells on the small frame, so I decided to weigh down the bottom right corner and the J with more shells.

I decided this spot next to the K above the frame was blank was empty so I added some wood veneers by Studio Calico.  The idea was to make this usable as a welcome in our house if I wanted to, so I used ‘hey’, ‘hello’, and ‘ahoy mate’.  Some gold sequins never hurt anybody, so I added some randomly.  This shot also shows the paint strokes as well, kind of like waves, no?

Have you ever done anything similar to this type of mixed media project?  Do you like what I did with the letters?
